The Best Gaming Laptop for 2017

Since it’s now 2017 and 2018 is right around the corner, you’ll be able to save money if you decide to buy the best gaming laptop 2017 had to offer instead of opting for the newly released models. There’s been enough time to see how these year-old models have held up, and because they’re older (computer years are like dog years) you may find a lot of bargains when you shop online. Here are our top contenders:

Razer gaming laptop1. Samsung Series 7 Gamer. Let’s put the capabilities of the Samsung Series 7 Gamer this way: it’s so formidable that its capabilities can still favorably compare with more recently released gaming laptops. It’s really that good. For your money, you’ll get a 2.3GHz Intel Core i7-3610QM, 16GB DDR3 RAM, NVIDIA GeForce GTX 675M Graphics, a 17.3 inch screen with 1920×1080 resolution, and a whopping 1.5 terabytes of storage.
With the Samsung Series 7 Gamer, you can play just about any game—even those which were released a year after the launch of this gaming laptop. It’s that tough, and sometimes you’d think that it did some sort of time travel in order to be launched back in 2017.

2. Alienware M18x. When it was released, the Alienware M18x looked like and performed like how Spock would have imagined a gaming laptop to be. The 18.4 inch screen in 1920 x 1080 resolution is a joy to gaze at. You get a robust Intel quad-core (with Hyper-Threading) Core i7-3610QM processor, along with a couple of 2GB AMD Radeon HD7970M CrossFireX graphic cards. You even get a 5.1 surround sound, so you can clearly hear the death throes of your dying enemies.

3. The Razer Blade. The actual gaming performance of the Razer gaming laptop doesn’t really compare with the others on this list, because the makers put at least some sort of emphasis on the laptop part of gaming laptop. It’s actually a gaming platform for those on the go. It’s very light at just 6.4 pounds, and that’s because the screen is a bit smaller. It also sacrifices a bit in terms of graphics performance with its Integrated Intel® GMA HD – Mobile Mode NVIDIA GeForce GTX 660M 2GB GDDR5 VRAM with NVIDIA Optimus Technology. The processor is powered by an Intel Corei7 Quad Core Processor with Hyper-Threading CPU: 2.2GHz (Base) and 3.2GHz (Turbo).Never mind the fact that it’s heavy and bulky, that the battery life seems like shorter than a snowball’s life in hell, and that the screen doesn’t really look great in direct sunlight. It’s not for those who like to play games while camping in a remote forest. It’s for those who like to play in a dark room with a table for the laptop.

It comes with a 17.3 inch screen with full HD 1920×1080, so you can also watch HD movies in style while on the road. It’s got 8 gigabytes of RAM, and just 500 gigabytes of hard disk space.

Choose any one of these “old” models which fought hard to vie for best gaming laptop 2017 honors, and you can be sure that they will last you far longer than you think.

The Wahl 5537-1801 Cordless Battery Operated Beard Trimmer Review

The Wahl 5537-1801 Cordless Battery Operated Beard Trimmer, is chock full of features and abilities and at ten to fifteen bucks is probably the best value beard trimmer currently available.

Wahl 5537-1801The Wahl 5537-1801 Cordless Battery Operated Beard Trimmer, is chock full of features and abilities, for ten to fifteen bucks. It’s not easy to get past that when you realize that it’s not just a beard trimmer, but comes with a separate, dedicated ear, nose and brow trimmer as well. That’s two units for the price of a Happy Meal, well just about. If you’re thinking it’s just a generic trimmer or shaver then you’d be wrong on both counts. To be clear, this is not a shaver, so you’re not going to get a clean shave, and this is not a run-of-the-mill trimmer, what it is, is a budget waterproof beard trimmer that will give you a reasonable (if not fancy) beard trim. Overall Wahl beard trimmers have earnt their name in the industry and are known for being high quality and producing good clean cuts.

The Basics of the Wahl 5537-1801

The Wahl 5537-180 comes with 11 items in the box, none of which is a cord or charger. If you are looking for something to plug in to a wall outlet, you won’t find it. For me, I like keeping my bathroom counter clear of clutter and the cord really cramps my style. Instead of using an internal power source and a cord to charge it, the Wahl uses regular (AA) batteries, which do not come in the box.

The main surprise for most, and for me as well, is that the box contains two hand units. One that holds the beard and mustache trimmer, which is usually a wider blade setup, and it a separate narrow-format ear and nose trimmer. There are other manufacturers who try to make them all in one, but that opens up a whole new can of worms. Having two separate units allows me to use the right tool for the task at hand.

I’ve had two-in-ones before, and you can’t use a battering ram to swat a mosquito, which is what it feels like when you try to use a beard trimmer to groom your nostrils.

All the extra gadgets in the world would be pointless, if the trimmer failed to do its main task adequately. In this regard, the blades perform admirably when called to ranks. The blades are made form high-quality carbon steel, which means two things. First, that the blades are hard, and that keeps them sharp for a long time. Second, it means that they won’t rust, and that keeps increases their longevity.

The Wahl 5537-180 comes with four beard guards, meaning  have five lengths to choose from when you’re sculpting your beard, mustache or goatee. The attachment locks into place and is also easily detachable. However, do keep in mind that they are all made from plastic, so a little care is in order. Too many instances of rough handling and you’re going to get broken beard guards. The lengths vary between 1/16th, 1/8th and 3/16th of an inch. For me it works out exactly as I need it and aside from times when I wash the head, the beard guard is perpetually on. In fact the other three other guards are still in the box, untouched.

The Good and the Bad with the Wahl 5537-1801

The great thing I like about the Wahl 5537-180 is that it’s extremely affordable and works as I hoped it would. Maybe my standards are just not high enough, but for me, all I need it to do is trim my manly hair on a daily basis and to the exact length I want, without it pulling it out of its follicle. This Wahl 5537-1801 does that superbly. Everything else is a bonus.

The ear and hair trimmer is something I use occasionally and sits on my counter in the storage base. The combs and brush, I don’t use as I already have my own. They are all nice to have but not essential.  The mineral oil that comes in the box lasts forever. At just a drop at a time every week, it takes quite a while to go through the vial. I also like that in has the Wahl 2-year guarantee. I’ve never had to use it, but from what I hear, the customer service experience during warranty claims is excellent.

One of the advantages of not having a cord, aside from the cumbersome nature of it, is that I don’t have to worry about what voltage is coming out of the wall. This is especially useful as I travel extensively and my beard trimmer always comes with me.

The main downside with the Wahl 5537-180 is that the casing feels a little flimsy. It is made of rather thin plastic and there is no solid tactile feedback from it when you hold it. It is also not entirely shaped well so you have to be dexterous just to drive the shaving head around your chin. But, fortunately, there is no cord to get in the way.

One thing I hope the designers at Wahl adopt, in the next iteration of this model, is a different power switch. I have noted on more than one occasion where the trimmer keeps going after I’ve flipped it to the off position. It may be a manufacturing flaw, I am not sure, but it doesn’t happen frequently enough, nor does it bother me enough to opt for a new trimmer. It is after all just ten to fifteen bucks and as long as I get out the door every morning sporting a neat beard, I think I am ahead of the game.

I certainly like the Wahl 5537-1801 Beard Trimmer as I feel it to be an absolute bargain when it comes to my personal grooming. It does as it’s supposed to and it has the necessary functions without becoming overwhelming.

Fellowes Intellishred SB-89Ci Shredder-Review

This week we are going to be looking at Fellowes’ Intellishred SB-89C paper shredder.  This is one of the most expensive shredder we have looked at in the home paper shredder class so it is going to be interesting to see how it stacks up.

The SB-89Ci is powerful enough to handle papers, credit cards, staples, paper clips and CDs.  With this type of shredding power junk mail should not be an issue.  Its rated at a 16 sheet shredding capacity with a run time of about 20 minutes.  This is a great model for a busy home office and ranks well for the best home paper shredder.

Whats nice about the SB-89Ci is the 100% Jam Proof technology.  When shredding papers, sensors monitor the thickness of the paper being shredded.  Green and Yellow light indicators let you know if you are within the sheet capacity.  Red light indicators let you know the paper shredder has been overfed.  Once overfed the shredder will stop automatically to allow the user to remove the excess paper and help to stop the paper shredder from breaking or stalling endlessly.

Technical Highlights

  • Sleek, modern shredder handles papers, CDs, junk mail, credit cards, staples, and paper clips
  • Shreds 15 sheets per pass into 5/32 x 1-1/2-inch secure, cross-cut particles
  • Patent-pending Jam Proof System that eliminates frustrating jams by preventing overloads and powering through misfed paper
  • Patented SafeSense Technology stops the shredder immediately if hands are too close to the paper opening
  • Offers an easy-empty seven-gallon pull-out bin and castersFellowes did a great job with SB-89Ci and its one of the top best home paper shredders.  Whether you have a couple of items to shred or a busy home office you can not go wrong with the SB-89Ci.  It no wonder its receiving such high reviews on Amazon.  Click here now to purchase the Fellowes Intellishred SB-89Ci.

Cooking Cheap, Eating Good: Fried Rice

Fried rice was never a big deal in my family when I was growing up, in fact, my only exposure to it was at cheap Chinese restaurants, and I wasn’t impressed. It wasn’t till college when my Indonesian house-mate showed me what fried rice could really be. Living on a very tight budget, a decent rice dish was a God send. Cheap, delicious and relatively easy to make, this meal has become a staple of my diet and is one of the best rice cooker recipes.

This will feed about 2-4 people, depending on portion size. It’s more of a guide line and a starting point than a recipe, and you should feel free to experiment and find your own style. Basically, you will need the following ingredients:

Sweet Soy Sauce (see bellow)

Meat (see bellow)

Vegetables (see bellow)

Cooking Oil (olive oil is best)

Spices (salt, chicken bouillon powder, black or white pepper, and garlic)

1) Rice

Start cooking your rice first, as this is the longest of the steps. I like to use a rice cooker, but you can cook it on the stove if you prefer, just be careful to watch it and keep it stirred if you do. As a general rule with rice, I use twice the amount of water as rice. For this dish, I normally use 1 ½ cup of rice and 3 cups water. After you get your rice started, you can work on the other steps. It should take about 30 minutes.

2) Sweet Soy Sauce

This is a hard one to find in American stores, but not to worry, it’s easy to make yourself. Take about three tablespoons of soy sauce, and stir in a table spoon of sugar (brown preferably) For a bit of extra flavor, add in a dash of teriyaki sauce. Set aside after mixing. The sugar may settle by the time you are ready for it so give it another stir right before adding it.

3) Vegetables

You have some leeway in what vegetables you want to add to your fried rice. At minimum, I use ½ of a white onion, chopped into small pieces. A bag or frozen stir fry mix is a cheap and easy extra, and my personal favorite. Either way, you’ll need a decent size frying pan out, with about 2 tablespoons of oil in it. Bring it up to medium heat on your stove, and once the oil is hot, throw in your veggies and a teaspoon of fresh garlic. Keep it stirred up, and not overly hot, you don’t want to over do them. Stir-fry them for a few minutes (longer if starting from frozen) untill they are done to your liking. Rake them into a bowl, and re-oil the pan (another 2 tablespoons)

3) Meat

You have a lot of choices here as well, and most everything works out fine. Chicken in the most common, but ham and ground beef work just fine. You may not believe it, but ½ of a block of SPAM cut up really fine makes for a delicious meal that people will love. In any event, whatever your choice, cut the meat into small pieces and, once the oil in your frying pan is hot again, throw it in. It is important that the meat gets fully cooked. You may wish to add a little of your soy or teriyaki sauce as you cook the meat. After that is accomplished, rake it in with the veggies. You’ll come back to it later. Re-oil that pan as before, and move on to the eggs.

4) Eggs

After the oil is reheated, crack two eggs into the pan and begin to scramble them. You will definitely want the stove on medium heat for the eggs, so make sure it’s not too hot. You are wanting to get the eggs only half scrambled, they should still be noticeable runny when they are done. After you have them half done, dump them in with the veggies and meat. It’s okay to lave them half done, they will finish cooking later, when every thing is mixed all together.

5) All together

For this final stage, you will want the largest frying pan you have. You’ll want the pan re-oiled, maybe 3 tablespoons or so, and get it hot. Have the heat set to between medium and high for this stage.

Dump the cooked rice into the pan. As soon as you do, quickly dump in your eggs, meat and veggies, and stir them up. Add in the soy sauce and keep it stirred up. You will want to add in a sprinkle (tea spoon or so) of each of the following: salt, chicken bouillon powder, and either black or white pepper (white pepper is the best). Keep it stirred up, and heat for no more than 3-4 minutes. Turn off the stove and enjoy.
